Manor Farm, Norfolk

The north-facing back garden of this old farm house had a peaceful atmosphere but lacked interest, being mostly laid to lawn. The design was inspired by contemporary Dutch garden designs and aimed to compliment this characterful house. A simple asymmetric layout of rectilinear lines echoes the shape of the existing terrace, and is softened by swathes of semi-transparent prairie-style planting, wrapped by informal gravel paths. The refurbished railway carriage summer house is framed by lush planting and climbing roses, with a sun-drenched deck in front. An old copper washtub found on site has become an attractive water feature, nestled among the planting. Rustic pergola walkways will soon be covered in Wisteria, and dramatic Cotinus shrubs will mature to become dramatic features within the flower-filled borders.
